The first step in data science is getting data. For physical data about the real world, this requires a sensor-based system to collect data and get it to the data scientist.

This event will provide a high level overview of how sensors can be used to collect data, how that data is transmitted and stored, and some of the limitations and pitfalls of sensor data. There will also be a demo of how such a system can be built using low-cost off the shelf electronics including Arduinos, Raspberry Pis, and assorted sensors.

Slides and code will be at: https://github.com/DataDrivenAngel/Sensors

About the speaker:

Will Angel is a Data Scientist and Author, co-organizer for the Data Visualization DC meetup group, and helps lead communications and development for the Data Community DC non-profit. He has worked in consumer and healthcare startups, and has a background in bioethics and physics.
